BuildUp provides a high level of personalised support to each student, to help build their confidence, maintain their engagement, and provide an effective learning experience for each individual student.
So how does it do this?
1. Immediate feedback on each question
Once a student attempts a question, they are provided with a fully worked out solution. For minor mistakes, this is usually enough guidance for the student to figure out how to solve the next time. Learn more
2. Adjusting the difficulty level of each question
When a student attempts a concept, the difficulty level adjusts to suit each student. Most students will start with easy questions, to build confidence, and then move to more difficult questions as they get easier one correct. Stronger students will move more quickly to harder questions, to avoid boredom. Learn more
3. Detecting demotivated behaviour and offering alternate options
If a student is showing demotivated behaviour (either really struggling and losing confidence, or not concentrating and clicking quickly through questions), their session will be interrupted and an alternate option suggested. Learn more
4. Providing accurate evaluations of a learner's mastery of each concept
Each student receives a grade at the end of every lesson that shows their current mastery of this concept. As students receive questions of varying difficulty, and also because they may have demonstrated these skill previously or in other questions, the grade received adjusts to take the student's total performance into account. This has proven to be a much more accurate measure of the student's level of mastery. Learn more.
5. Suggesting if a concept needs revision
If a student previously completed a concept, likely some time ago, but have since shown through their work on other topics that this concept needs to be revised, a small "revise" icon will appear on the concept. Learn more
6. Recommending the most suitable next concept to work on
On their topic page, each student receives a recommendation of the most suitable concept to work on. This "personalised learning path" is very useful in helping a student gradually build mastery and confidence over the whole course. (Note that a teacher's assignment always comes first, and takes precedence over recommendations). Learn more
7. Indicating whether a student is ready to learn a concept, or if more work is needed on earlier concepts
On the topic page, every concept is marked with a different label to reflect how ready a student is to attempt that concept. This is based on which concepts the student has already completed, and how they performed, and how all the concepts are related to each other in the curriculum. Learn more
In addition, there are many tools to assist the teacher to guide and support their students.
